Day 148: Writing a Haiku

Welcome to our “ool”

Notice there’s no “p” in it.

Let’s keep it that way.

This is just one of the many hysterical and random haikus from Haiku-o-Matic. I urge you to visit the site and click on “haiku straight up” (just keep watching the screen, new ones come up). You will not be disappointed. In fact, if you read this post and find yourself feeling let down, like I haven’t given you a bright spot in your day, then consider this link my apology. I think you will find it very satisfactory.

For those of you who don’t know what a haiku is (coughmydadcough), did you just skip out of middle school? Everyone learned what a haiku was in school!

A haiku is a Japanese poem that has a specific format. There are three parts (in an English haiku, each part is given a line; in a Japanese haiku they are all on one line.) Here is the format:

Line 1, 5 syllables

Line 2, 7 syllables

Line 3, 5 syllables

If you wanted to, you could study haikus for years and still be learning more and more about how they are created and put together. Google “writing a haiku” and you will be impressed, and will find yourself wrapped up in Japanese thought.

So I decided to write one. Well, I wrote a couple.

All that my mind is on lately is my upcoming annual family vacation. My parents have a lake house in New Hampshire, and this is probably the only week out of the year that our whole family is ever up there at one time. It is the best time of the year. So I decided to write about it. Don’t laugh. (Because when I read it to my dad I totally did. I couldn’t even read the 3rd line, because I sounded so ridiculous!)

Oh, dear New Hampshire

How loud I hear you beckon

I am coming soon

Oh man… haha, you really need to write one. Just pick something, anything that you see and write… and let it out! Haha, it’s actually a great way to get laughing! And here’s an idea: get a friend and write one for each other about the other person.

Here is another I wrote:

tick-tock clock, tick-tock

all day long you help me run

i hope you don’t break

And another! (I just can’t stop!) This one is a riddle, sort of. Can you guess what it’s about?:

sounding like the same

One created the other

and now I can see
