Day 140: Live Band Karaoke

So where were you last night after10:30? I was at the Sands Casino… by myself. Yes, I am a closet gambler and I have a problem.

Just kidding. But seriously, I was at Sands. However, I wasn’t gambling. I was watching people rock out at karaoke, totally making my own previous performance look like child’s play.

Sands has a karaoke competition going on Monday nights. There are 30 slots for singers, and there is a live band you sing with! It is fantastic. Oh, and did I mention the winner gets $250? And, you compete on the finals night with 8 other winners for a grand prize of $1000. Now, I don’t know about you, but that sure makes me want to sing!

I looked over the song list  (it’s not that big) and was trying to decide between 2 songs. I picked Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”, because I have totally destroyed countless ex-boyfriends’ cars and thought I could personify the song pretty well. (Total sarcasm and not true).

I’ll be perfectly honest and tell you that I was nervous. Not so much until I saw the place. It was held at the Molten Lounge, and I thought that it would be set apart from the casino. It’s not. In fact, the stage and lounge is so open to the casino that people from the casino come over to watch the singers.

Thankfully, some of my family and some friends came out to cheer me on. Their encouragement was hysterical. While watching the singers before me, it was all “Oh you totally have him” or “She’s not going to win”. Then they moved towards the advice. “You need to try to interact with the band members” and “You should flash the crowd! You’d definitely win!” (Hahaha, yea I took that as a joke, but I’m not so sure they were joking!)

Finally, I was called up. Here’s the crazy thing with me. I always get nervous to do things in front of people until the second I’m doing it. The moment I got on stage, I was just so excited! I of course dedicated the song to the women out there who wanted sweet revenge (hey, you got to work the crowd when you can) and the music started.

Sorry for the not-great pictures.

I’ll admit, it wasn’t my best performance. I think it was the song choice, and I was kicking myself for not having chosen the other one, Bon Jovi’s Living on a Prayer. It would have been perfect. But, the crowd seemed to enjoy my karaoke-ing, and I loved having a live band behind me!

After another singer or two, my friends and family started to trickle out, and this is where I found myself alone in a casino at 10:30. I had to wait until midnight for the winner announcement, but honestly, listening to the last 10 singers, I realized I could’ve left whenever I wanted to, because there was just no way I was going to win. Some weren’t so great, and would probably be better staying singing in their shower, but some were incredible! I was totally out of my league. Yet, I’m still thinking of going back next week. It was just so fun!

Here’s a short clip of me, don’t laugh! Well, ok, you can laugh, but not to my face.
